The Western branch of the East African Rift System
runs along the border of Uganda with the Democratic
Republic of Congo. Young faulting, often accompanied
by volcanism and geothermal surface manifestations,
                              marks the Rift Valley.
Based on research carried out at the hot springs
in the western region of the country around the
shores of Lake Albert, the potential for geothermal
power is estimated at 450 MW (McNitt, 1982)
