The Bombay Electric Supply and Transport Company
(BEST) started the first electric tram
service in May 1907. Within two years there were 20
miles of tracks with overhead wiring.
The Tata Hydro-electric Project had established
a power plant in Khopoli in 1915. BEST
bought the entire output from this plant. Later, in
the 1930's, as Tata Electric expanded and opened other
plants in Kalyan and Mumbai, BEST continued
to buy up all the power output of these plants.
