 Areva T&D to supply HVDC systems in ChinaMay 7, 2009 - Datamonitor Areva's Transmission and Distribution division has been awarded, in partnership with China Electric Power Research Institute, a contract to supply high voltage direct current systems for projects interconnecting the Ningdong and Shangdong regions in north-east China and the Three Gorges Dam to Shanghai. The contract, worth E100 millions, has been signed with the State Grid of China. The systems will be delivered in December 2010. High voltage direct current (HVDC) technology connects power networks and transmits large amounts of electricity over long distances with minimal losses, according to Areva. With plans to transmit more than 130GW of electricity over the next five to 10 years, Areva expects great demand for HVDC technology in China.
