Chilean President Sebastian Pinera and his visiting Peruvian counterpart Alan
Garcia on Thursday agreed to enforce the electricity integration in the region.
The two leaders urged Chile, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil
and Ecuador to join the "Deep
Integration Area" for regional electricity interconnection.
They ordered officials of relating sectors in
Chile and Peru to summon a high level meeting to
discuss the terms of this agreement.
Months ago, the Peruvian Energy Ministry talked
about the possibility of developing a "South
Energy Node," which included the construction
of four thermoelectric centers, with an investment
of 1 billion U.S. dollars.
Besides boosting the regional electricity integration,
both countries showed their interests in moving
ahead bilateral agreements for more energy exchanges.
They also agreed to fight together against smuggling
and piracy in the border areas.
Garcia arrived in Chile Wednesday morning on
a visit to strengthen bilateral ties.
