![]() Consortium To Develop Transmission NetworkSept. 21, 2011 - Renew Grid - renewgridmag.com LS Cable & System, KEPCO, the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute and the Korea Electric Power Research Institute have announced that they are working on a research and development (R&D) project to implement a superconducting power transmission network. The project was initiated based on the need to develop large-capacity, high-efficiency and environmentally friendly power transmission technologies using superconductor technology in order to effectively handle demand for next-generation power network implementation and to respond to global green growth, according to LS Power. "This national project will be an opportunity for Korea to advance further in the global electric power market," says Junhyeong Jo, chief technology officer and vice president of LS Cable. The objectives of this project are to select systems for superconducting device application, to analyze the systems and derive system integration plans; and to discover systematic support measures to commercialize the technologies and secure operation standards, maintenance procedures and engineering techniques. LS Cable & System will manufacture transmission
level superconductor cable systems, developing transmission
level superconductor cable system application performance
evaluation, operation and maintenance technologies,
developing cooling systems for the transmission level
superconductor cable system (10 kW or higher), and
developing and assessing prototypes for application
of domestically produced superconductor cable materials. |
