Iran, Iraq Share Power
May 17, 2006 - San Diego Uniton Tribune
Iran signed a $110 million agreement
to provide electricity to Iraq, which is contending
with power shortages and growing energy demand as
postwar reconstruction continues. Under the terms
of the agreement, Iran and Iraq will set up four power
lines connecting the two countries, through which
Iran will provide 1,000 megawatts of power.
The energy transmission will be made
through Abadan, Khorramshahr and Karkheh, three locations
in the Iranian province of Khuzestan bordering Iraq.
The Islamic Republic of Iran will bear $68 million
of the cost, and Iraq the rest. “Construction of these
lines will start immediately,” Iranian Deputy Energy
Minister Mohammad Ahmadian said.
