For years we have shown you the enormous renewable
energy potential of our planet. Using just 3-4% of the land area would allow
us to capture enough solar and wind energy to power the entire global electricity
demand. GENI has published 2 dozen reports on how individual nations could
be 100% renewable when they commit the political will. There is no lack of
renewable potential!
Five
regions comprise 50% of global population
and 62% of global GDP: United States, Russia,
China, India and the European Union.
They all use fossil fuels and nuclear power
for 70-88% of their present electricity demand.
These 5 regions must lead this energy revolution,
or all humanity will suffer the dire consequences of climate change.
To meet the 2oC target set
by the G20 and IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), we must
reduce the fossil and nuclear share from 80% to 20%, and increase the renewable
share from 20% to 80%.
This is a massive change in new energy development
and power delivery. To meet the 80% renewable goal, we advocate that all
new power development be from renewables starting now. As we phase out
the older, polluting coal and nuclear plants, we recommend replacement by new
renewable energy resources and smart grids.
There
is no time to waste. Climate scientists are
saying “we
are now completely off track,"
as most projections assume that fossil fuel
usage will grow along with population. Sustainable
advocate Lester Brown has called for a mobilization
similar to the WWII, shifting the 5 regions'
industrial base to clean energy development.
The pain of climate change is already upon
us – so it's time we build a new vision –
the
Renewable Plan.
