We receive dozens
of reports and opinion pieces every month on how to change the present course
we are on. How do we reduce Greenhouse Gas emissions? The UNEP
projections to meet the Paris Agreement climate goals require an energy
transformation on our planet. This "Short List" by Michael Barnard is
an excellent summary of the most important shifts we need to make.
Of interest is that the first 3 bold steps
are in full alignment with The GENI initiative:
- Electrify
Everything: convert all auto and bus transportation, heating, and trains to use electricity
that can come from renewable energy sources.
- Overbuild
Renewable Generation: develop solar, wind, geothermal, biomass on all
continents. There are vast untapped resources everywhere.
- Build
Continent-Scale Electric Grids And Markets: with both high-voltage AC and DC
transmission, remote renewables can power distant cities.
There are several energy industries that
must fully shift away from fossil fuels. Coal and gas generation must be
shuttered and replaced by renewables. Subsidies and financing for fossil duels
must end and shift those financial benefits to developing renewables.
These are big
policy and business steps, usually made at the federal and corporate levels.
